Job Description

Job Description:

Employer Civil Transportation Solutions is seeking Systems Engineers to support the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Advanced Technologies & Oceanic Procedures (ATOP) program at our Gaithersburg Maryland campus.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape and implement NextGen system enhancements for FAA's oceanic air traffic control system that is currently deployed at 3 centers, Oakland California, Anchorage Alaska and Long Island New York. ATOP allows air traffic controllers manage civilian, business, commercial and military aircraft over 24 million square miles of oceanic and adjacent airspace, allowing for reduced separation and emissions while maximizing the use of jet stream, saving transient aircraft significant time and costs.

The selected engineer will support NextGen system enhancements as desired and directed by the FAA customer. The primary role is deriving, implementing and verifying system requirements for new features and capabilities that work well with the existing/Legacy system architecture. As a Systems Engineer, you will provide input to and participate in wide-range engineering activities from the initial concept of operations (CONOPS) development to solution design, development, verification and validation, as well as deployment support. This opportunity will allow you to delve into and engage across various System Engineering domains with a focus on analytics and problem trouble-shooting across the full software development life cycle.

You must have a good academic understanding or experience in system or software engineering concepts and principles to be able to contribute to and/or assist with system architecture, functional design, system concept development, requirements engineering, operational case analysis, requirements baseline control and management. You will be expected to assist in authoring and/or contributing to the development of technical SE work products, such as engineering white papers, requirements and design documents. You will also support system functionality change requests (CRs), program trouble reports (PTRs), HW, SW, CAS/COTS integration and test/requirement verification and validation activities.

Basic Qualifications
  • 1 - 3 years associate level system engineering experience (recent college graduates encouraged to apply)
  • 4-year Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering with focus on system engineering or system architecture

Preferred Qualifications
  • Some familiarity with FAA Air Traffic Domain
  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited college/university
  • Knowledge or experience across multiple Systems Engineering domains (infrastructure and applications) with a focus on analytics, system functionality, and customer satisfaction as the architecture evolves and matures over the software development life cycle
  • Good understanding of system engineering practices & principles to lead and/or assist with:
    • System architecture
    • System concept development
    • Requirements engineering
    • Operational analysis
    • Decision analysis
    • Systems definition
    • System risk management
    • Requirements baseline control & management
  • Some familiarity with Air Traffic Control (ATC) software or systems, avionics, general/commercial aviation or national air space (NAS) procedures as they relate to FAA's Air Traffic Control programs
  • Familiarity with system engineering architecture, modelling, and design approaches
  • Strong knowledge in requirements analysis and test verification methods to include authoring, reviewing, inspecting and delivering system engineering documents
  • Some experience working with Legacy system integration of complex CAS/COTS products, including modelling, scenario generation and simulation techniques
  • Exposure to or experience with AIX/Linux systems
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others in a team environment
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) to work directly with the FAA customers to engineer their requirements and objectives as well as interfacing with other functional areas such as software, integration, and test
